Practice My Citizenship

Frequently asked questions

Answers about the Australian citizenship test and about Practice My Citizenship: the free tests, the mock test rules, languages, accounts, payments and refunds.

Is this the official citizenship test?

No. Practice My Citizenship is an independent preparation service, run by Happy Migration. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Australian Government, and we cannot promise that you will pass.

The official test is set and run by the Department of Home Affairs. The official study resource is Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond, at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Always check it for the current test content.

How does the free trial work?

Two free tests need no account: the free practice test, 20 questions from every part of the test with each answer explained as soon as you choose it, and the free mock test, 20 questions in 45 minutes, marked like the real test. Take them as often as you like.

A free account also lets you try a few questions by section or at random, and keeps your results. Full access opens the whole question bank, unlimited mock tests, flashcards, review of your mistakes and the mock interview.

What do the plans cost, and what do I get?

There are two plans, and both unlock exactly the same things:

Weekly subscription: A$15 a week. It renews every week until you cancel.

Lifetime access: A$150, paid once. It never expires and never renews.

Full access gives you unlimited practice questions, timed mock tests with pass or fail scoring, every topic and language, a review of the questions you got wrong, favourites, flashcards, audio and progress tracking. Prices are in Australian dollars and include any GST that applies.

How close is the mock test to the real test?

The mock test follows the real test's rules: 20 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. To pass you need at least 75%, which is 15 correct answers, and you must also answer all 5 Australian values questions correctly.

The questions are practice questions written for this service, not the real test's questions. The Department of Home Affairs can change the test, so check its website before your appointment.

I scored 75% or more. Why does my mock test say I did not pass?

Because one of the Australian values questions was answered incorrectly. The real test needs every values question right, whatever your overall score, and the mock test marks you the same way.

To strengthen that section, choose Australian Values on the practice page.

How do I go back over the questions I got wrong?

At the end of every practice session, the results list marks each answer Correct or Incorrect and shows the explanation.

Every question you get wrong is also saved for you. Choose Review Incorrect on the practice page to practise just those.

How do I change the language?

Open Settings and pick English, Arabic or Farsi/Dari. The whole app changes, including the questions, and Arabic and Farsi are laid out right to left.

On the website, use the language button at the top of any page.

Your choice is remembered on your account, so it follows you to the website and to any other phone you sign in on.

What does my readiness score mean?

It is our own estimate of how ready you are, worked out from the questions you have answered and how recently — not a mark from the Department of Home Affairs and not a prediction.

The real test asks 20 questions, you need 15 correct, and all 5 Australian Values questions must be right. Practising the topics you get wrong moves the score faster than repeating what you already know.

Can I practise without internet?

Not at the moment. Questions, your progress and your access are read from our server, so the app needs a connection.

If an answer does not seem to save, check your connection and try again — nothing is lost while you are offline, but it cannot be recorded until you are back.

Is there a phone app, and will my progress carry over?

Yes. The app for iPhone and Android is on its way to the App Store and Google Play; the Get the app page links to it as soon as it is available, and an Android test version is there now.

Sign in to the app with the same account you use here. Your progress, favourites and paid access belong to your account, not to the device, so they follow you between the website and the app.

I cannot sign in — it says to verify my email

An account has to be verified before it can sign in. When you registered we sent a link to your email address; open it and you can sign in straight away.

If it is not there, check your spam or junk folder. The link expires, so if it is old, register again with the same address or use "Forgot password" to get a fresh email.

I forgot my password

On the sign-in page, choose Forgot password? and enter your email address. We will send you a link to choose a new password.

If the email does not arrive within a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder, and check that the address is spelt correctly.

If you created your account with Sign in with Apple, you have no password here: sign in with Apple again.

Nothing happens when I choose Sign in with Apple

Sign in with Apple opens in a small pop-up window, and some browsers block it. Allow pop-ups for practicemycitizen.com, usually from the icon at the right-hand end of the address bar, then try again.

Use the same Apple ID each time: a different Apple ID signs you in to a different account, without your progress or purchase.

I changed my password and my other phone was signed out

That is deliberate. Changing your password signs out every other device on the account, so that somebody who knew the old password cannot stay signed in on one of them.

The device you changed it on stays signed in. Sign in again on the others with the new password.

The payment went through but I still do not have full access

Give it a moment and restart the app: a store can take a little while to confirm a purchase.

On the website, press Refresh access status on the payment page, or sign out and sign back in.

If it still has not appeared, make sure you are signed in with the account you bought it for. If you are, send us a message through the contact page and choose "Payments and refunds" — include the email address on the account. You will not be charged twice.

I paid on the website but the app says I have no access

Your progress and your access belong to your account, not to one device, so they follow you between the website and the app.

Make sure you are signed in to the app with the same email address you used to pay. If you are, close the app fully and open it again — it checks your access when it starts.

Can I change from the weekly plan to lifetime access?

Yes. On the access page, choose Upgrade to lifetime. Once the payment goes through, your weekly subscription stops renewing at the end of the week you have already paid for, so you are not charged for both.

How do I cancel a subscription I bought on the website?

If you subscribed on this website, open your Profile and choose Cancel subscription. You keep full access until the end of the week you have already paid for, and you are not charged again.

How do I cancel a subscription I bought in the app?

A subscription bought inside the app is managed by the store that sold it, not by us, and it has to be cancelled there.

On iPhone: Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android: the Play Store app, your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions.

Cancelling stops future payments. Your access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Can I get a refund?

Our services come with guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law. If something has gone wrong, use the contact page and choose Payments and refunds, and tell us what happened.

Purchases made in the App Store or Google Play are refunded through that store.

Why does the app ask for the microphone?

Only for the mock interview, where you answer a question out loud and it is checked for you. The recording is sent to be turned into text and nothing else.

If you never use that, you can refuse the permission and the rest of the app works normally.

The Listen button does not read anything out

Check that your phone is not on silent and that the volume is up — the app uses your phone's own voice.

If it is still silent, your phone may have no voice installed for that language. On Android you can add one under Settings, then Accessibility, then Text-to-speech. In the app, Settings has a voice section where you can switch engines and hear the difference.

My study reminders are not arriving

A reminder needs permission to show notifications. If you said no the first time, the app cannot ask again — turn them on in your phone's settings for Practice My Citizenship, then switch the reminder on again in the app's Settings.

Reminders are also separate from news and offers, so turning one on does not turn on the other.

How do I get a copy of my data?

Open Settings and look under Privacy. "Download my data" writes a file you can save or send anywhere your phone offers, and "Email me a copy of my data" sends the same thing to the address on your account — never to any other address.

On the website it is in Settings too: choose Download my data.

It contains everything we hold about your account: your details, your consents, your practice history and your purchases.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings and choose Delete account. You will be asked to confirm, because it cannot be undone.

On the website, open your Profile and choose Request account deletion, then open the link we email you and choose Delete my account.

Deleting removes your personal information and your practice history. Payment records are kept without your name or email, because the law requires us to keep them. If you have a subscription, cancel it in the App Store or Google Play as well — deleting the account does not stop a store billing you.
