Your test appointment: what to bring and what happens

A checklist for the day of your Australian citizenship test: the photo ID and letter to bring, when to arrive, what happens before the test, and what to leave at home.

Checked against Home Affairs' own pages on 28 September 2026. Rules can change, so the official page has the final word. We are an independent service, not part of Home Affairs.

Your appointment letter

If you need to sit the test, Home Affairs sends you a letter with the date, time and place of your appointment. To change it, follow the instructions in the letter.

Appointments are held at Home Affairs offices in most capital cities and at some Services Australia (Centrelink) offices. If you applied from outside Australia, you are invited after you return.

What to bring

  • Your original photo ID, such as a passport, an Australian driver licence or an Australian proof of age card
  • Your appointment letter, printed or on your phone
  • Any other documents the letter asks you to bring

Bring the original photo ID. Certified copies and photos of it are not accepted, and without it your appointment is moved to a later date.

Before the day

  • Check that every document is attached to your application in ImmiAccount
  • If your address, name or other details have changed since you applied, attach the new documents in ImmiAccount
  • Arrange childcare: children are not allowed in the test centre, and there is no childcare there

On the day

  1. Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time.
  2. Staff talk with you about your application, confirm your identity and take your photo.
  3. You sit the test on a computer or tablet. Your belongings go where staff tell you, and no study material comes into the test room.
  4. Your result appears on the screen when you finish.

If English or the computer is hard for you

A Test Facilitator can read the questions aloud, give you headphones, use the computer for you, or select the answers you say aloud. If you asked for an Assisted Test in your application, you have 90 minutes.
